Why I Became a Functional Medicine Practitioner?

I was inspired to start Sunshine Functional Healing due to my own health failures. I unfortunately have suffered for years with various symptoms such as Anxiety, Depression, ADHD, Migraines, Fatigue, Joint Pain, IBS, and Severe Brain Fog.

I finally was placed on a medical leave of absence, after falling asleep while driving became a habit.  As a nurse practitioner in charge of people’s lives every day, I felt I could no longer safely perform my job.

I did everything my doctor asked and still came up short. I was even sent to see multiple specialists (neuropsychologist, Neurologist, rheumatologist, cardiologist, pulmonologist, dermatologist, psychiatrist (because you must be crazy if they can’t find an answer, right?), counselor, and a chiropractor.

I’ve done physical therapy and multiple other treatments.

But still nothing worked…

All I did was spend a lot of money and fill my medicine cabinet with tons of prescriptions that never worked.

Finally, I found functional medicine. I was able to identify the root cause of my symptoms and reverse many of the symptoms!

I went back to the basics: good rest, good healthy whole foods, exercise, decreased stress, and positivity. I worked on being grateful and learning techniques that have healed my gut (which was found to be the root of my problems)!

I want to help people like me who are getting lost in the healthcare system and just  not getting the right answers for their health. Many autoimmune disorders as well as diseases like cardiac disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s start due to inflammation in our bodies.

Conventional medicine treats the symptoms that are caused due to the inflammation; however, they never get to the root cause of the inflammation which eventually leads to chronic disease.

Our health is dependent on our eating habits, lifestyle and environmental factors far more than we realize. Our genes in our bodies change and react to food, lifestyle, and environment.

Because everyone has different genes, some things affect others more (like the girl who has an endless appetite and is sooo skinny).

If you have the set up for a bad gene and then expose it to an unhealthy source such as gluten if you have a gluten sensitivity or maybe you have a very stressful job or maybe your exposed to environmental toxins that gene can change and not work properly causing inflammation and other health problems.

In functional medicine you can identify if you have any of these genes that predispose you to adverse reactions. As a result of implementing lifestyle changes your health improves.

My symptoms have resolved and I've never felt better... even though multiple doctors told me I’d have fibromyalgia forever and that there was really nothing that could be done to improve my symptoms.

I want this for my clients.

The Best Part of Being a Functional Medicine Practitioner

My favorite part of my business is being able to truly make an impact on others and also lead a healthy lifestyle! Walking the walk is important to me… and to my health!

Healthcare workers, although they know better, often do not follow what they preach.

Healthcare workers carry high loads of stress, have poor sleep habits from being on call and working long shifts, have little time for exercise, eat on the go, etc. (WAY BEFORE COVID)!

With my own practice I can live the lifestyle that keeps me healthy so I can lead by example, provide great outcomes for my clients and still actually enjoy my family & my life.

Win, win, win! 🙂

Being able to help people that are ready for change is rewarding and inspiring!

My goal is to provide outstanding care and teach people to become their own health advocate by giving them the skills they need to succeed and to achieve optimal health and wellness.
