Do you ever sit and wonder why me?
I know that I have…
In fact, many times in my life, I have asked myself, “Why me?”
Why do I have fibromyalgia?
Why was I not born rich & famous?
Why do I have red hair?
Why am I having pain?
When experiencing tragedy and hardship in a world where it seems like you suffer more than others, this is an easy question to ask.
It comes to mind just as easy as simple math.
However, after trying hard to seek understanding, and not letting my ego get in the way of the truth, I realized not only is the framing of this question inaccurate, but it is a pointless question to ask in the first place.
“Why me?” is a self-centered perspective, which is not indicative of the bigger picture.
Suffering is universal and is not just specific to you…. Although at times it does not feel this way.
However, this is not to say your suffering is insignificant or invalid.
Recently I conducted a survey about fibromyalgia to determine the Top 3 Challenges Faced by many fibro warriors.
Although the results weren’t news to anyone that has fibromyalgia….
Top 3 Challenges
Pain
Fatigue
Brain Fog
… I was surprised to see how many of the respondents wanted to know “Why Me?”
Throughout my life I have faced many challenges… challenges that I know would have crippled many others.
I often think of the phrase "What doesn’t kill us, makes us stronger", and have believed this to be true in my life.
What I have learned though, is that this is not true for everybody…
So why me?
After many years of struggling with trying to understand “Why Me?”
I took back control of my life and started saying, “Why not me?”
Why not I has changed my perspective and has helped me learn how to take my once negative thoughts of “Why me” and turn them into a positive.
I have fibromyalgia so that I can help others in their journey to obtaining fibromyalgia relief.
I was not born rich & famous because I wanted to make my own fame… even if it’s just being the best mom, wife, and friend I can be.
I have red hair so that I can stand out in the crowd… allowing me to be seen & heard.
I have had pain so that I can truly empathize and sympathize with others both mentally & physically.
So when you start to go down the slippery slope of “Why Me” start thinking “Why Not Me”...
This will change your perspective and help you make the most out of a tough situation.
Nobody wakes up and shouts excitedly through the house “Yes awesome today I have fibromyalgia… I’m so lucky… Yes!!!”
Right?
But we can wake up and shout excitedly “today my fibromyalgia let me help someone else” or maybe “If I didn’t have fibromyalgia I would never have realized conventional medicine was not my true calling.”
You get the idea… I hope!
